A divan base is upholstered, sits on the floor, and usually offers built-in drawer storage — which matters more than people expect in a smaller bedroom. It also supports a mattress evenly across its whole surface, which tends to be kinder to the mattress over time. A bedstead, whether wooden or metal, is the more decorative choice and leaves usable space underneath, though it sits on slats rather than a solid platform.
If storage is tight, a divan with two or four drawers is usually the more practical answer. If the bed is a feature of the room, a bedstead earns its place. Both work perfectly well; it is a question of what the room needs.
Open-coil mattresses use a single connected spring unit. They are the most affordable option and perfectly adequate for a guest room or occasional use. Pocket-sprung mattresses house each spring individually in its own fabric pocket, so they respond independently to weight and movement — noticeably better if two people share a bed and one moves about at night. Spring counts get quoted heavily in advertising, but past a certain point the difference is marginal; the quality of the springs and the fillings above them matters more.
Memory foam moulds to your shape and relieves pressure points, though some people find it retains warmth. Hybrid mattresses combine pocket springs with a foam or latex comfort layer and are the most popular choice for that reason. Firmness is largely personal preference and relates partly to body weight rather than there being one correct answer.
The one thing worth insisting on: lie on it properly before you buy, in the position you actually sleep in, for a few minutes rather than a few seconds.
