When a working factory and office needs a new floor, the brief is never just about looks. It has to take heavy daily footfall, stay easy to maintain, and be installed with as little disruption as possible to the people working around it. That was exactly the case on our latest commercial flooring project — a full carpet tile fit-out at the Gunn & Moore factory in Colwick, Nottingham.
Gunn & Moore has been handcrafting cricket bats in Nottingham since 1885, so it was a real pleasure to carry out commercial flooring work for another long-standing local name. We supplied and fitted just under 400m² of contract carpet tiles across the offices, a full staircase and landing, and every corridor throughout the building.
The brief: a hard-wearing floor for a busy working environment
The space is a genuine working factory and office — high traffic all day, every day. The floor needed to cope with that level of use, hide everyday traffic marking, present a clean and professional finish across a large area, and remain practical to maintain and repair over the long term.
The specification
- Product: Burmatex go to® carpet tiles
- Colour: Coal Grey — a deep, practical mid-grey that hides traffic marking and ties a busy commercial floor together
- A hard-wearing loop-pile contract tile, chosen for its durability under heavy footfall in a long-term office and factory environment
Carpet tiles are a sensible choice for commercial spaces of this kind. As well as standing up to heavy use, they allow individual tiles to be lifted and replaced if one area gets damaged or worn — so the floor stays serviceable for years without needing to be redone wholesale.
The installation
- Full strip-out of the existing carpet tiles before we started. Old adhesive residue was assessed and the subfloor checked and prepped so the new tiles bed down clean and flat.
- Tiles laid using F. Ball Styccobond F41, a high-tack pressure-sensitive tackifier adhesive. It holds the tiles firm underfoot but still lets individual tiles be lifted and replaced later — so spot repairs or access work don’t mean re-doing a whole area.
- Set out and quarter-turned across offices, corridors, stairs and landing for a consistent, professional finish.
The result is a clean, durable, low-maintenance floor built to take the day-in, day-out traffic of a working factory and office.
