An honest note before anything else: we supply Alternative Flooring to order, but we do not hold it on display in any of our showrooms. You would be choosing from samples and the manufacturer’s own literature rather than seeing a full stand, and we would rather say that at the top of the page than let you drive to Netherfield expecting otherwise.
That is a genuine limitation with a brand like this one, because Alternative Flooring is design-led. Their patterned ranges in particular are the sort of thing you want to see at some scale before committing. We can get samples to you, and a large sample in your own room under your own light is in some ways a better test than a showroom board. But it is not the same as walking round a display, and if seeing it in person matters more to you than the specific design, one of the brands we do display may serve you better.
What we can do is supply any of the range, measure properly, and fit it with our own teams. If you already know the Alternative Flooring design you want — from an interior designer, a magazine, or their own website — that is where we are genuinely useful.
Alternative Flooring is a UK brand that has built its reputation on carpets that do not look like everybody else’s. The range splits broadly into a few families.
Patterned and crafted carpets are what the brand is best known for — geometrics, florals, stripes, dots and herringbones. This is where the designer collaborations sit. A patterned carpet is a commitment in a way a plain is not, but on a staircase or in a hallway it can carry a whole scheme.
Natural fibre carpets in sisal, jute, coir and seagrass. The same practical considerations apply as with any natural fibre: seagrass resists staining because the fibre is impermeable, sisal is harder wearing but absorbent, and none of them belong in a bathroom or anywhere consistently damp. If natural fibre is what you are after and you want to see it properly first, we hold full Crucial Trading displays at Wollaton and Duffield.
Wool carpets from fine to chunky, plain or patterned, and deep pile ranges including the Barefoot collection.
Faux ranges in man-made fibre, which are stain and moth resistant with indoor and outdoor options — worth knowing about if you like the natural look but need it somewhere natural fibre would not survive.
Alternative Flooring will make any of their carpets up as a rug or a runner to your dimensions, with a choice of border and edging. This is often the better route into the brand: a patterned rug on a wooden floor gives you the design without committing a whole room to it, and it is a sensible way to use a bold pattern in a space where fitted carpet would be impractical.
Buying a carpet you have not seen at full size is the part people are reasonably nervous about, so here is how we handle it.
Samples first, and large ones where we can get them. Look at them in the actual room, in daylight and under the lights you use at night. Pattern scale is the thing photographs mislead you on most — a geometric that looks subtle on a screen can be assertive across a whole floor.
We measure before anything is ordered. With a patterned carpet this matters more than usual, because pattern repeat affects how much material a room needs and where joins can sensibly fall. A room that would take one width of a plain can need noticeably more of a pattern. We would rather find that at the measure than at the fit.
Lead times are longer than for stocked ranges. Anything ordered in takes longer than something we hold, and we will give you a realistic date rather than an optimistic one.
Then we fit it with our own employed teams. Pattern matching across a join, and setting a pattern out correctly on a staircase, is skilled work and not something to hand to whoever is free. We move furniture, lift and dispose of your old flooring, and have an in-house joiner if doors need easing.
We cover Nottingham and Nottinghamshire, Derby and Derbyshire, and north Leicestershire.
Can I see Alternative Flooring in your showrooms?
No. We supply Alternative Flooring to order but we do not hold it on display at Netherfield, Wollaton, Duffield or Ashby-de-la-Zouch. You would be choosing from samples and the manufacturer’s literature. We can get samples to you to look at in your own room, which for judging colour is arguably better than a showroom board, but it is not the same as seeing a full display.
If you do not display it, why buy it from you?
Fair question. If seeing a brand in person matters most to you, one of the ranges we do display will serve you better and we will say so. Where we are genuinely useful is if you already know the Alternative Flooring design you want — from a designer, a magazine or their website. Then it is about measuring correctly, ordering the right quantity for the pattern repeat, and fitting it properly, which is the part that actually determines whether you are happy with it.
What is Alternative Flooring known for?
Design-led carpets that do not look like everybody else’s — patterned and crafted ranges in geometrics, florals, stripes and herringbones, including collaborations with interior designers. They also make natural fibre carpets in sisal, jute, coir and seagrass, wool ranges from fine to chunky, and faux ranges in man-made fibre.
Can I get an Alternative Flooring rug instead of fitted carpet?
Yes, and it is often the better route into the brand. Any of their carpets can be made up as a rug or runner to your dimensions with a choice of border and edging. A patterned rug on a wooden floor gives you the design without committing a whole room to it, and it works in spaces where fitted carpet would not be practical.
Does a patterned carpet cost more to fit?
It can need more material, which is the part people do not expect. Pattern repeat affects how much carpet a room takes and where joins can sensibly fall, so a room that would take one width of a plain may need noticeably more of a pattern. We work that out at the measure rather than at the fit. The fitting itself is also more skilled, particularly matching pattern across a join or setting it out on a staircase.
How long does an ordered carpet take?
Longer than something held in stock, since it is ordered in rather than pulled from a warehouse. We will give you a realistic date when we quote rather than an optimistic one. If you are working to a deadline, say so at the measure and we will tell you honestly whether it is achievable.
