Kingsmead Carpets at Carpet Style

Kingsmead is the name we reach for most often when someone wants a wool loop or a Berber, which is a surprisingly specific need and not every manufacturer does it well.

A loop pile is constructed differently from a twist. The yarn stays as a loop rather than being cut, which gives a flatter, more textured surface that holds its appearance under traffic rather than developing the shaded, walked-on look a cut pile can. It suits period property, hallways and anywhere you want texture without pattern. The trade-off is that it is less forgiving of pets with claws, and we will say so before you buy rather than after.

We carry Kingsmead across our showrooms at Netherfield, Wollaton, Duffield and Ashby-de-la-Zouch, and samples can go home with you. With a loop or a Berber in particular that is worth doing, because the flecked and heathered effects read very differently in daylight than under showroom lighting.

Natural Home, Everyday Home and the Book of Stripes

Kingsmead organise their carpets into tiers that genuinely correspond to different budgets and different rooms.

Natural Home is the wool range and the reason most people end up with a Kingsmead carpet. It is unusually deep in loop and Berber constructions — Berber Seasons and Berber Traditions in 100% wool, Suffolk Berber and New Berber Attraction in wool loop, Vitronic Berber and Artwork in an 80/20 wool blend, plus Kaleidoscope, Mineral and Natural World. If you have looked at wool loop elsewhere and not found the right one, this is where to look next.

The Book of Stripes collection deserves a mention of its own. Anthology, Prologue, Epilogue and Manuscript are striped wool carpets, and a stripe is one of the few patterns that works genuinely well on a staircase — it draws the eye up the flight and disguises wear far better than a plain. Worth seeing if you have a long straight staircase and have been defaulting to a plain twist.

Everyday Home is the practical range, built around polypropylene and polyester. These do not feel like wool and are not pretending to. What they do is resist staining and shrug off things that would mark wool permanently, which makes them the sensible answer for a rental property, a family hallway or a room where the floor takes a beating.

Which tier is right for the room

The honest guidance is the same as with any wool against synthetic decision: it depends on the room rather than on which is better. Wool in bedrooms and a formal lounge where it is appreciated and not abused. Everyday Home on stairs, in hallways and anywhere food, pets or muddy boots are involved. Mixing them through a house usually gives a better result than committing to one fibre everywhere.

Measured and fitted by our own teams

Loop pile is less forgiving at the fitting stage than a cut pile, which is a good reason to care who lays it. A loop shows a badly set-out seam more readily, and on a staircase the weave direction has to be handled properly or it will look wrong from the bottom of the flight.

Our fitting teams are employed rather than subcontracted, which is why we are comfortable going into that level of detail. We measure every job ourselves rather than working from figures given over the phone, we move furniture, and we lift and dispose of your old flooring as part of the job. If doors need easing once the new carpet and underlay are down, we have an in-house joiner.

Underlay is worth getting right with a wool loop. Wool is naturally resilient and a decent underlay lets it do what it is good at, recovering from compression rather than flattening permanently. We will recommend a sensible pairing rather than defaulting to the cheapest option on the shelf.

We cover Nottingham and Nottinghamshire, Derby and Derbyshire, and north Leicestershire from our four showrooms.

    Kingsmead Carpets — common questions

Can I see Kingsmead carpets in your showrooms?

Yes, at Netherfield, Wollaton, Duffield and Ashby-de-la-Zouch, and samples can go home with you. With a wool loop or Berber this is worth doing — the flecked and heathered effects read very differently in daylight than under showroom lighting.

What is the difference between a loop pile and a twist?

In a loop pile the yarn stays as a loop rather than being cut, which gives a flatter, more textured surface. It holds its appearance under traffic rather than developing the shaded, walked-on look a cut pile can. A twist is softer underfoot and more forgiving. Loop suits period property and hallways; twist suits bedrooms and lounges.

Is a wool loop carpet suitable if I have pets?

It is the one caveat worth raising. A looped construction is less forgiving of claws than a cut pile, because a pulled loop shows. If you have a cat that scratches or a dog with long nails, we would steer you towards a cut pile or towards the Everyday Home synthetic ranges instead. We would rather say that before you buy than after.

What is the Book of Stripes collection?

A set of striped wool carpets — Anthology, Prologue, Epilogue and Manuscript. A stripe is one of the few patterns that genuinely works on a staircase: it draws the eye up the flight and disguises wear far better than a plain. Worth looking at if you have a long straight staircase and had assumed a plain twist was the only option.

What is the difference between Natural Home and Everyday Home?

Natural Home is the wool and wool-blend range, including the Berbers and wool loops. Everyday Home is polypropylene and polyester — it does not feel like wool and is not pretending to, but it resists staining and shrugs off things that would mark wool permanently. Natural Home for bedrooms and lounges, Everyday Home for stairs, hallways and rental property.

Do you fit Kingsmead carpets yourselves?

Yes, with our own employed fitting teams. Loop pile is less forgiving than cut pile at the fitting stage — a badly set-out seam shows more readily, and on stairs the weave direction has to be handled properly. We measure every job ourselves and cover Nottingham, Derbyshire and north Leicestershire.
