Almost every meaningful quality difference in luxury vinyl comes down to the wear layer — the clear protective film over the printed design. A 0.3mm wear layer is a domestic specification suited to bedrooms and low-traffic rooms. 0.55mm is the sensible choice for hallways, kitchens and family living space. 0.7mm and above is a commercial specification, and it is what we would put into a Derby household with large dogs or a busy through-route from the back door.
Overall gauge, meaning total plank thickness, is a different measure and is often confused with the wear layer in showroom conversations. Gauge affects how the floor feels underfoot and how well it copes with a slightly imperfect subfloor. Wear layer determines how long the design survives. If a retailer quotes you only one of the two numbers, ask for the other.
Glue-down LVT is bonded directly to the subfloor. It gives the flattest, most authentic result, handles underfloor heating well, and is what we would normally specify for a kitchen or an open-plan ground floor. Click-fit LVT floats over an underlay, installs more quickly and lifts more easily later, which suits rental properties and rooms where you may want to change your mind.
The choice matters more than most people expect in Derby’s older housing stock. Victorian and Edwardian properties around the city rarely have a genuinely flat subfloor, and a floating floor will telegraph every dip and hump within a year. In those homes we will usually recommend proper latex screed preparation and a glue-down finish rather than the cheaper route.
Our Duffield showroom, trading as Meadow Vale Carpets, carries the LVT ranges and covers Mickleover, Allestree, Littleover, Spondon, Chaddesden, Oakwood, Mackworth, Chellaston and Borrowash, out through Belper and Ripley. Every floor is fitted by our own employed team, with Ivan leading the LVT work.
If you are looking at a particular brand, our Karndean flooring in Derby page covers the individual ranges in detail. It is also worth comparing against laminate flooring in Derby before you commit, since the price gap is narrower than it used to be. Opening hours and directions are on the Derby showroom page.
