Modern laminate is a long way from the cheap, plasticky boards of twenty years ago. Today’s ranges deliver remarkably authentic wood and stone visuals, deeply textured embossed surfaces, and scratch-resistant top layers rated for some of the busiest homes in Derbyshire. It’s the smart choice when you want the look of real wood or stone without the price tag, the maintenance, or the worry about kids, dogs and spills.

The most useful thing to understand before you buy is the AC rating — the abrasion class that tells you how much wear a board is built to take. AC3 is fine for bedrooms and lightly used living rooms. AC4 is the sensible default for hallways, landings and family living spaces. AC5 is specified for commercial settings, and it is often worth the small extra outlay in a busy family home with dogs, or a through-lounge that takes constant traffic.
Board thickness matters for a different reason. Thicker boards sit more solidly underfoot, sound less hollow and cope better with minor subfloor imperfections. A thin board on an uneven floor will always feel and sound cheap, however convincing the visual on the surface.
Then there is water, where the terminology genuinely matters. Water-resistant and waterproof are not the same claim. Water-resistant boards tolerate a spill wiped up promptly. Genuinely waterproof rigid-core ranges tolerate standing water without swelling at the joints. If your floor is going anywhere near a dishwasher, a washing machine or a back door, tell us and we will point you at the right specification rather than the cheapest one.
Laminate is not always the right answer, and we would rather say so at the measure than after the fit. If you want real timber underfoot, our V4 engineered wood range is worth seeing. For kitchens, utilities and wet areas, many Derby customers end up choosing Karndean LVT instead. You will get an honest comparison of all three rather than a steer toward whichever suits us.

Laminate is forgiving compared to LVT and engineered wood, but it still rewards proper fitting. Subfloor preparation matters — any high spots will telegraph through the boards within months, creating squeaks and premature wear. Expansion gaps need to be exact, especially in the larger open-plan layouts common in new-build Derby homes. And underlay choice has a bigger impact on long-term performance than most retailers will admit.
Every laminate job we book includes proper subfloor assessment, the right underlay specification for your setting (acoustic, vapour-barrier, or both), and a full check of door clearances, threshold transitions and skirting/beading finishes before we leave site. Every job starts with a free home measure. We check the subfloor properly rather than eyeballing it, take accurate dimensions, and talk through thresholds, door clearances and how the floor will run between rooms. Laminate looks best when board direction is planned across the whole ground floor rather than room by room, and that decision is much easier to make before anything is ordered.
If you have underfloor heating, say so at the measure stage. Laminate works well over UFH, but only with the right board and the right underlay, and there are output limits worth respecting if you do not want gapping at the joints over the first heating season.
On fitting day we uplift and dispose of the old flooring, prepare the subfloor, lay the underlay to the agreed specification and fit the boards with correct expansion gaps at every perimeter. We finish with beading or refitted skirting, whichever suits the room, and we take the waste away with us.
